Borovets is Celebrating Its 120th Anniversary
Borovets is the winter resort nearest to the capital Sofia – only 68 km away. It is the oldest Bulgarian winter resort and this year it is celebrating its 120th anniversary with a diverse programme. The seasons opens on 17 December with many entertainment events, free night skiing and lessons for children and beginner skiers.
The resort is located at an altitude of 1,350 metres on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain. The marked ski pistes have a total length of 58 km. The longest piste in Borovets is 12 km long. There is 35 km long cross-country skiing trail, ski-jumping hill and biathlon facilities. The resort offers excellent conditions for mountain tourism and sports: alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, mountain biking.
In Borovets the ski season lasts from mid-December to April. There are three skiing zones – Sitnyakovo, Yastrebets and Markudzhik. Markudzhik is the one located at the highest altitude. The pistes of Yastrebets and Markudzhik 3 are a challenge to any skier and have been used many times for various competitions.
Snowboarders can use some of the pistes in Borovets. In the higher parts of the Rila Moiuntain – the Markudzhik Skiing Centre, the snowfall can reach levels of up to 2 metres and there are good conditions for extreme skiing. Borovets also has a children‘s snow park which offers entertainment for the children, as well as specialised skiing training.
The hotels in Borovets offer various options for relaxation and entertainment outside of the ski pistes. Some of them have indoor swimming pools and spa centres. There are many restaurants, bars and clubs in Borovets. The restaurants offer a diverse cuisine – Bulgarian, European and from the rest of the world.
